DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

It is important to understand cinema as a multifaceted artistic expression, capable of reinventing itself when combined with other arts. The inspiration behind A Night With Her came from chronicles, which seduce by banning the story and by emphasizing the freedom of literary style. In this case, however, no words are used. This choice reveals my basic motivation as a director: to translate this freedom to filmmaking, based on a theme. Just like jazz.

Starting off from an initial situation (a man and a woman, alone at night), cast and crew were asked to create action in almost real time. Only the basics were established: location, time for filming, costume and visual idea, based on low lights. This is how A Night With Her came to be. In this highly erotic fiction film, open to improvisation, hidden aspects common to any relationship began to emerge – from desire to domination, through insecurity, doubt and curiosity.

This is the second part of a trilogy of short films about sexuality with no dialogs. The other shorts are: Danae (2004) and Life Next Door (A Vida ao Lado, 2006).
