Shorts

Danae (Gustavo Galvão, 2004), with Larissa Salgado and Vinícius Ferreira

In May 2008, 400 FILMES started production of its 16th short – My Own Way of Being Alone (A Minha Maneira de Estar Sozinho), an intimist drama that flirts with pop and Expressionism. At the same time, the company was involved in the post-production of its 15th short: A Certain Oblivion (Um Certo Esquecimento), a surprising psychological thriller that revisits the traumas of the military dictatorship in Brazil. While these shorts were taking shape, other films by 400 were being shown around the country (and the world).

Also in 2008, Programadora Brasil purchased three of our products: Danae (2004), The Lens and the Window (A Lente e a Janela, 2005) and Life Next Door (A Vida ao Lado, 2006). Throughout that year, Life Next Door was shown in festivals from Cuiabá, Brazil to Bern, Switzerland, from Tel-Aviv, Israel to Lisbon, Portugal. And it was also shown in film theaters in 12 Brazilian cities, as part of the project Curta Petrobras às Seis. In the same season, another successful film by 400 was selected for the Petrobras às Seis program: Day Off (Dia de Folga). Since the film was released, in 2006, at the Brazilian Film Festival of Brasília, where it won best screenplay award for a 35mm short, the film was a sensation wherever it was shown with its mix of surrealism and social criticism.

The results of that period were an acknowledgment of the company’s effort to balance a humanistic character and esthetic enquiry, besides confirming the vocation of 400 FILMES to introduce Brasília and represent brasiliense cinema to the world – a virtue that leads us to celebrated works like Swappers (Roleiros, 2003) and The Blind Foreigner (O Cego Estrangeiro, 2000), which have been shown in 44 festivals and won 13 awards. This vocation continued in 2010, with A Certain Oblivion and My Own Way of Being Alone, acquired by Programadora Brasil and TV Brasil, respectively. Together, our shorts total 171 minutes and 181 festivals.
