• The filmmakers

In Between (Entre Um, Marcius Barbieri, 2004), with Paolo Mannina

Written and directed by André Carvalheira, the award-winning short Day Off (Dia de Folga) was produced by Gustavo Galvão, edited by Marcius Barbieri and had Guilherme Bacalhao as assistant director. That was in 2006. Two years later, Bacalhao was production manager in My Own Way of Being Alone (A Minha Maneira de Estar Sozinho) – directed and produced by Galvão, photographed by Carvalheira and edited by Barbieri.

The alternation of roles has been the rule since 400 FILMES’ first projects. The examples above demonstrate the model of collaborative work adopted by the company, which relies on its members’ commitment to each project. Individually, each of them has built an extensive career in film and other audiovisual production. André Carvalheira, for example, started as a camera assistant in 1996 and has, since then, worked with important filmmakers in the Brasília scene. He is now an up and coming cinematographer, with more than 25 films in his curriculum. As director and scriptwriter, he made five shorts. Works such as Every Breeze (Toda Brisa, 2003) and A Certain Oblivion (Um Certo Esquecimento, 2008), as well as the previously mentioned Day Off, are both poetic and surprising.

Marcius Barbieri is also considered one of the best professionals in the city, having edited more than 20 shorts between 2003 and 2010. In addition to all that, he established an instigating filmography as a director of experimental shorts, where he questions the way in which contemporary man relates with the images he consumes. So, films like The Blind Foreigner (O Cego Estrangeiro, 2000), Tactile Virtual Sex (Sexo Virtual Táctil, 2003) and The Lens and the Window (A Lente e a Janela, 2005) have won wide recognition. In 2010- 2011, he had his first experiences as feature film editor in Nine Chronicles for a Screaming Heart (Gustavo Galvão) and Is the City One Only? (Adirley Queirós).

Before Nine Chronicles for a Screaming Heart, his first feature as a director, producer and scriptwriter, Gustavo Galvão had a prolific career both as filmmaker and curator. He had seven shorts released in seven years (2002-2008), four of them written by him. Three of those shorts were shown around the world and are still sought after by TV stations and different cultural initiatives: Danae (2004), Life Next Door (A Vida ao Lado, 2006) and My Own Way of Being Alone (A Minha Maneira de Estar Sozinho, 2008). Together, they reinforce a proposition in which urban relations are the basis theme for revaluing the esthetic aspects of cinema. As a curator, Galvão was responsible for 12 film exhibitions from 2004 to 2010.

With an extensive television experience behind him, Guilherme Bacalhao directed a significant number of programs and documentaries in the Special Videos Department at TV Câmara, a cable channel based in Brasília. He was responsible for the award-winning series Stories of the Resistance (Contos da Resistência, 2004), about the different trends that opposed the military regime in Brazil. His interest for stories and characters that are ignored by the large media was translated into the shorts Swappers (Roleiros, 2003) and Happy Christmas (Feliz Natal, 2006). As assistant director or producer he has worked in approximately 20 films.
