Day Off (Dia de Folga, André Carvalheira, 2006), with Cláudio Jaborandy

With four short films in the official selection of the 39th Brazilian Film Festival of Brasília (2006), 400 FILMES secured its place among the Brazilian capital’s most prolific film production companies. From then on, the company has stood out not only for the sheer volume of work, but also for its loyalty to a principle: to use audiovisual language as a tool for investigating human experience.

Created through the joining of two small creative studios that had been working together since 2000, 400 FILMES has been making its mark in the market and in festivals since 2003. Films like The Blind Foreigner (O Cego Estrangeiro, 2000), Danae (2004), The Lens and the Window (A Lente e a Janela, 2005), Life Next Door (A Vida ao Lado) and Day Off (Dia de Folga), both released in 2006, represent a proposition that combines a humanistic character with esthetic experiment. The films were purchased by broadcasting companies such as TV Cultura (a public broadcasting company) and Canal Brasil (a cable channel specialized in showing Brazilian productions), and also by nationwide audience formation initiatives (such as Programadora Brasil and Curta Petrobras às Seis).

400 FILMES’ artistic and commercial interests coincide with those of its founding members. The company is headed by four filmmakers born between 1971 and 1976, who broke into the film scene in the early 2000s: André Carvalheira (director, scriptwriter and cinematographer), Guilherme Bacalhao (documentary filmmaker and producer), Gustavo Galvão (director, scriptwriter and producer) and Marcius Barbieri (director, editor and scriptwriter).

At 400 FILMES, they have made 14 fiction shorts and two documentaries. These productions, which were either funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, Petrobras and the Government of the Federal District, or produced independently, were shown at more than 180 festivals in Brazil and abroad – including important events such as the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (Cuba), Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine de Toulouse (France), Odense International Film Festival (Denmark) and the International Short Film Festival in Drama (Greece).

With the fiction feature Nine Chronicles for a Screaming Heart (Nove Crônicas para um Coração aos Berros, directed and produced by Gustavo Galvão, 2012) and the documentary Is the City One Only? (A Cidade é uma Só?, directed by Adirley Queirós, 2011), the production company is broadening its scope and becoming a reference in Brazilian contemporary cinema.
